I am here in my office, in the ATLANTIC OCEAN. See what it's like!
My office in the Chief Engineer’s cabin
My office has no plants, nor large glass windows. It is located inside the Chief Engineer’s cabin, on board a cargo ship, somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean.
Here, work never truly stops. The sound of the engines is constant, like a heartbeat. You no longer hear it — you feel it. It is the reminder that the ship is alive, moving, enduring. And that responsibility does not end when the watch is over.
Inside the cabin, the office is simple. Papers, drawings, notes, a cup of coffee that often gets cold before I manage to drink it. Decisions are made here that are not visible from the outside, yet they keep everything running. Small details that make the difference between “everything is fine” and “there is a problem.”
Inside the cabin, the office holds drawings, manuals, checklists, and notes from previous voyages. This is where maintenance is organized, repairs are scheduled, and instructions are given to the watchkeepers. The job does not end when working hours are over; the Chief Engineer is always on standby.
The sound of the main engine is continuous. It is not simply heard, but measured: in revolutions, in vibrations, in the ship’s behavior. When everything works properly, the ship sails “quietly.” When it does not, you realize it even before the instrument shows it.
And yet, the ocean is there too. Not in front of me — but all around me. You sense it through the movement, through the slight trembling of the ship, through the realization that you are days away from land. That gives you a different kind of discipline. It teaches you to think calmly, to prevent problems, and to respect the engine and the sea equally.
This is my office. Not beautiful in the classic way. But real. And absolutely necessary.
At sea, technical knowledge is combined with experience and judgment. There are no easy solutions and no second chances. There is only the right decision, at the right moment — for the engine, for the ship, for the crew.
This is my office. One cabin, a few square meters, and thousands of horsepower that must operate flawlessly, 24 hours a day.
