Abandoning ship. The worst decision of your life.

What is the reason?

Abandoning ship is not just a safety procedure. It is the moment when you accept that the ship – your “home,” your job, your responsibility – can no longer be saved. It is perhaps the heaviest decision you will ever make at sea.

In maritime life, we grow up with one basic principle: a ship is not abandoned easily. But there are situations where staying is more dangerous than leaving. And then, abandoning ship becomes the only way.

Personally, I hope I never have to experience it for real. But I have taken part in drills and scenarios that showed me clearly how critical that moment is.

When do we reach the point of abandonment?

The decision to abandon ship is made only when:

  • The fire is out of control

  • There is serious flooding

  • There is a risk of explosion

  • The ship loses stability

  • There is no possibility of saving it

According to the regulations of the International Maritime Organization and the SOLAS convention, the procedure is strictly defined.

But no matter how strict the procedure is, the decision is never “easy.”

The moment of decision

The order to abandon ship is given by the Master.
It is the last option.

Before that moment, there have already been:

  • Firefighting efforts

  • Watertight integrity checks

  • Coordination with authorities

  • Distress signals (Mayday)

I believe that the psychological pressure at that stage is enormous. It is not just a technical decision. It is a life decision.

Ship abandonment procedure

The procedure includes:

1️⃣ General Alarm

The crew proceeds to the muster stations.

2️⃣ Wearing life-saving equipment

  • Lifejackets

  • Immersion suits (if required)

3️⃣ Lifeboat preparation

  • Checking supplies

  • EPIRB activation

  • SART activation

4️⃣ Launching

The lifeboat is launched and moved away from the ship.

Training in these steps is mandatory. But a real abandonment is different from a drill.

What happens inside you at that moment?

Abandoning ship is not only procedure. It is emotion.

  • Uncertainty

  • Fear

  • Responsibility for the crew

  • Thoughts of family

In every drill, I try to imagine it is real. Because if you do not take it seriously in training, you will not be ready in reality.

The greatest dangers after abandonment

Abandonment does not mean rescue. It means a new phase of survival.

Dangers:

  • Hypothermia

  • Dehydration

  • Injuries

  • Bad weather conditions

  • Delayed rescue

The sea does not forgive.

The importance of training

Proper training makes the difference.

Seafarers are trained in:

  • Survival techniques

  • Fire fighting

  • Crisis management

Compliance with the standards of the International Maritime Organization is mandatory, but personal readiness is a matter of professionalism.

I always say:
“Never go to a drill as if it were a chore.”

Why do we call it the “worst decision”?

Because it means that:

  • The ship is lost

  • The situation is out of control

  • There is no other option

A seafarer has a bond with the ship. Abandonment is an admission of defeat against nature or disaster.

But we must remember one important thing:
Life comes before the ship.

Real incidents

History has shown that:

  • Timely abandonment saves lives

  • Delayed decisions cost lives

The balance is delicate.

The most important lesson

Abandoning ship is not an act of cowardice. It is an act of responsibility when all other options have been exhausted.

I believe the best abandonment is the one that never has to happen.
But if it does, we must be ready.

Conclusion

Abandoning ship is the most difficult and heaviest decision in a maritime career. It is the moment when training, composure, and teamwork are tested to the fullest.

It is not just a SOLAS procedure.
It is a life decision.

And if that moment comes, there is no room for panic — only for the correct application of what we have learned.
