Magic Pipe on Ships. The most dangerous illegal practice in the engine room
In the engine room of a cargo ship, there is a term that every marine engineer knows: the magic pipe.
From my experience as a Chief Engineer, I can say clearly that this is not equipment or a system. It is an illegal bypass practice.
What is a magic pipe
A magic pipe is an unauthorized piping arrangement used to:
- bypass the Oily Water Separator
- discharge oily bilge water directly overboard
- avoid proper recording
Why it is dangerous
It violates the MARPOL Convention and leads to marine pollution.

From my experience:
- inspectors check piping systems carefully
- hidden connections are often discovered
- consequences are severe
Consequences

- ship detention
- criminal charges
Proper practice
A professional engineer must always:
- use OWS correctly
- monitor 15 ppm system
- keep accurate records
Final thoughts
From my experience at sea, integrity in the engine room is just as important as technical knowledge.
The magic pipe is not just illegal – it is a serious breach of professional responsibility.
